FASANENSTRASSE SYNAGOGUE
FASANENSTRASSE SYNAGOGUE
I love painting synagogues! When I saw a heartbreaking photo of the Fasanenstrasse Synagogue right after its destruction on Kristallnacht, 1938, I felt compelled to paint it—to bring something beautiful back to life. Synagogues have always drawn me in. As a child in my grandfather’s Young Israel shul, I was a terrible davener—more fidgeting than praying—but the space itself, the hushed holiness, always made me feel connected to a force both ancient and enduring. That feeling- an indescribable mix of awe and comfort, being both grounded and lifted at once- has never left me, and it’s what I try to capture in my synagogue paintings.
